Anna Eyler & Nicolas Lapointe

As a painter I am always amazed at what media artists can create with today's technology. Anna Eyler and Nicolas Lapointe are certainly a perfect example of this. Only a year and a half after completing their BFAs, these multi-disciplinary artists already have an impressive accumulation of work and are constantly seeking new opportunities that are relevant to their practice. Knowing your audience can be tricky, but they certainly know where they fit in and this results in their work being presented in a context that is appropriate and more importantly, rewarding.

I had the pleasure of viewing their currant video project, which included an audio recording intuitively controlled by Nicolas as the video plays. Turns out this audio, which sounded/felt like vibrations, was a heavily edited recording of sounds from the beach just outside The Cottage : birds, wind, a man cutting (something).

Thankfully they did a great job of explaining their process to my technology challenged mind. Using a program to build 3D "models" of mountains, filming these from different angles within the same program and then creating the actual video, which, ends up being this beautiful ethereal mountainous landscape. Paired with the sound they created, I watched with anticipation and slight trepidation, combined with an earnest appreciation for the beauty and lightness of the pink mountains.

Work aside, we consumed an entire four layer cake for Anna's birthday and sampled some wine and rose gin. While waiting for their video to render, Anna and Nicolas walked along the shores of the Outaouais river and were lucky enough to enjoy some beautiful fall weather. They even managed to make me a little jealous when they told me they ran into a blue heron, a fox and a rabbit. I myself have only seen turkey vultures, skunks and racoons.

Visit their websites to find out about their upcoming exhibitions and projects : www.annaeyler.com + www.nicolaslapointe.com. Anna and Nicola now return to their busy lives in Montreal.
